Top 5 Must-Visit Islands in the Visayas, Philippines: Panay, Negros, Siquijor, Leyte, and Samar

Travel Guide to the Visayas, Philippines

While most travellers head straight to popular tourist spots like Boracay or Bohol, Huub shares with us a travel guide to the Visayas, the central islands of the Philippines, which are still relatively unknown. The Visayas is one of the three island groups in the Philippines, forming the backbone of the country on the map. With its diverse nature, different languages, stunning beaches, and vibrant festivals, the Visayas group represents the heart of the Philippines. Discover some of the lesser-known but astonishing gems in the Filipino archipelago.

Panay Island

The Complete Tropical Picture

Panay, the sixth largest island in the Philippines, has the potential to be a fantastic backpacking destination, yet only a few tourists seem to venture there. While most visitors flock to the famous Boracay island, Panay offers more than just powdery beaches. Head south to the Iraynon Bukidnon rice terraces in San Remigio, surrounded by the stunning central Panay mountain range. These terraces are unique in the Visayas and alone worth the trip to Panay. Make sure to explore the lush mountains and waterfalls in western Panay as well. San Jose de Buenavista is a short taxi ride away from San Remigio and can be easily reached by bus from Iloilo City, the island’s largest city.

A Philippine island isn’t complete without a lively fiesta. In the city of Kalibo, the people of Panay celebrate the annual Ati-Atihan festival, a mix of Catholic and tribal traditions held on the third Saturday of January. The festival is known as the Mother of Philippine Festivals and features drummers and dancers in tribal costumes. Planning ahead for Ati-Atihan is crucial as hotel rooms get booked months in advance.

Iloilo City

Iloilo City in the east of Panay serves as a gateway to Negros island. Before heading to Negros, explore the charming province of Iloilo. The city boasts unique architecture, including the Miagao Church, one of the oldest Spanish colonial churches in the Philippines. Buses between Iloilo City and Antique pass by Miagao, making it a convenient stop along the way.

Negros Island

Home to the Tallest Mountain

After a short boat ride from Iloilo City, Negros island welcomes visitors divided into two provinces: Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. Arriving in Bacolod, Negros Occidental’s capital, travellers are enchanted by the island’s natural beauty. Bacolod hosts the MassKara festival, a vibrant celebration dating back to 1980. The city transforms into a colourful hub with parades, dancing performances, and competitions.

To escape the city buzz, take a bus from Bacolod to San Carlos via Don Salvador Benedicto for a scenic road trip. Stop at Malatan-og Falls for a refreshing break. Further south, Bais City offers a unique experience for whale watching in the Tañon Strait. Rent a boat and explore the waters for dolphins and pygmy sperm whales. Don’t miss the Manjuyod Sandbar, a picturesque tropical getaway perfect for snorkelling.

Mount Kanlaon

Adventurous travellers can embark on a 3-day trek to the summit of Mount Kanlaon, the highest mountain in the Visayas. The tour includes transportation, conservation fees, and guides, offering spectacular views along the way.

Siquijor Island

Enchanting and Relaxing

Siquijor, known as the Enchanted Island, is a laid-back destination with captivating landscapes. Rent a motorbike to explore the island, including the scenic Cambuhagay Falls in the south. Visit the Century Old Balete Tree and enjoy a fish spa experience. Sing your heart out at local karaoke spots or head to Guiwanon Spring Park for a unique karaoke setting above the sea.

Leyte Island

An Outdoors Paradise

Leyte, known for its mountainous interior and underwater wonders, offers a range of activities for adventure seekers. Trek to Alto Peak for stunning views or dive in Sogod Bay for exciting underwater encounters. Relax on Digyo Island’s white sandy beaches or explore Kalanggaman Island for a castaway experience.

Samar Island

Travelling Under the Tourist Radar

Samar, the third largest island in the Philippines, boasts a rich history and abundant natural beauty. Explore Langun Gobingob cave system, visit waterfalls near Calbayog City, and marvel at the Bel-at rock formation on Biri Island.
