I arrived in the Philippines after traveling extensively throughout mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The decision to visit the Philippines was impromptu, influenced by fellow travelers’ glowing reviews. However, upon reaching Manila, I was met with disappointment.
-
Manila, a bustling and congested city, lacked the captivating chaos of other Southeast Asian cities like Ho Chi Minh City. Instead, the traffic jams and modern neighborhoods left me underwhelmed. The abundance of cockroaches in the streets was also a stark contrast to my previous experiences in Southeast Asia.

The presence of armed guards throughout the city was a disconcerting sight, unfamiliar in the Southeast Asian context. Despite initial discomfort, I gradually acclimated to the city’s security measures. Exploring Intramuros, a historical fortress, did not leave a lasting impression on me, and even the renowned "Mall of Asia" failed to impress.

While Manila failed to captivate me, my overall experience in the Philippines was positive. The city’s lack of notable attractions was overshadowed by the country’s rural and island destinations. Manila may hold potential for those familiar with its hidden gems or locals, but for casual visitors, it’s best suited for a brief layover before exploring the country’s more appealing regions.
